Weekend Discussion

This week, Good Old Games is offering 30% off a two-game Activision RPPG bundle, which includes Vampire the Masquerade Redemption and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Steam has a few titles on sale, including Eufloria for 50% off along with Strongbad: Season One, which is also included in a big sale on Telltale's official store. Make sure to check out the Steam "Specials" tab for additional promotions.

Impulse has a few sales, including Mount & Blade: Warband for $15.53 while Direct2Drive also has Mount & Blade: Warband on sale (and slightly cheaper) along with 50% off all Paradox Interactive software and 75% off Star Wolves 3. Also, various Shack users tell us that Ubisoft has a special promotion for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (PSN) pre-orders at its official online store.

As for the Shack Commanders, we're sticking to the games that have already cemented a spot in our gaming collections. What are you playing this weekend?
  • Alice O'Connor: I have no idea. I might play video games but it has been a while since I played computer games.
  • Brian Leahy: This weekend I'm traveling down to Comic-Con, so I'll be playing some Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and hopefully some other stuff on the floor. While traveling, I'll probably be playing more iPhone games and maybe some more Persona 3 Portable. The next (100) times you read this, it will just be StarCraft II so have fun with that.
  • Garnett Lee: I'll be wrapping up DeathSpank this weekend, returning to the Pacific Northwest for the first Alan Wake episode 'the Signal', and taking a break between them to test out the Medal of Honor beta on 360 now that's it's finally live.
  • Jeff Mattas: It's catch-up time. While I'm not running through the forest shooting at demonic lumberjacks (Alan Wake), I'll be adding to my star total (Super Mario Galaxy 2) and collecting poop (DeathSpank). And poker. Texas Hold 'em to be exact.
  • Xav de Matos: Returning to Bright Falls in Alan Wake's first DLC 'The Signal,' slashing through Dragon Age Origins on PC and loving it, throwing down in some hardcore Alien Swarm action and revisiting a personal all-time fave, Age of Empires III.

That's around where I got a bit bored too. The game really screams for co op.

Torchlight didn't have the atmosphere that the Diablo games had. Even though I got bored with Torchlight fairly quickly I'm hopeful Diablo 3 will be different.

More like it lacks the complex skill system, class interactions in multiplayer, and loot system. The atmosphere isn't what kept people in D2 for 1000s of hours, great as it was.

i think theres a 1000 things that made Diablo 2 what it was, which is why it is so hard to clone LOL

Torchlight had wonderful atmosphere. It was just not Diabloesque.

from the gameplay videos it looks like they are mixing up the playstyle quite a bit in Diablo 3, there were lots of little things in there that I didn't really see in Torchlight.

Torchlight's problem (for me at least) is that you pretty much spam one ability the whole game and have to deal with a HUGE amount of crap loot. The game had zero depth.

as a single player game, yes. TQ has coop which is an entirely different and superior TQ experience, imo.

True. That's a good point. I never really played much co-op because of the logistical difficulty of finding people to play with and keeping it going over the length of the game.

Yeah, but man it's worth it. I have many, many coop hours into the game. So much fun.

It will be a lot easier with Diablo 3 and Battle.net. I'm sure I will play plenty of co-op then :)

I actually had never played more than 5min of Diablo2 until the last week. I am now at lvl12 (sorc) and playing with vile Duffman and Dschingis Khan, it's veen a lot of fun. Simply some spit shine, UI improvements and movement changes (eg, not on a grid) and the game would still be amazing. I can only hope D3 is a well-modernized D2.

i think i got to 20 something. eventually i had found or crafted such good stuff that i wasn't ever getting anything good enough to replace it, and that kind of took a lot of the appeal away.

      Hijack:

What do you think Diablo 3 will do in terms of identifying items? Because that was my least part in torchlight because there was a lot of shit items in torchlight that dropped constantly.

Maybe in d3 they'll have knowledge tomes that let you automatically know what a certain class of item is. Like if my barbarian buys an axe tome he will automatically know what the axes are unless you get up to a gold class o weapon. Then you might need Cain's help.

I'm so friggen excited for Diablo 3 dudes. :(
