Morning Discussion

Today is officially the last day of E3 2010, which means that the asset flood will start winding down and we'll have more time to produce lovely previews and other wonderful things. As for me, well, I plan to sleep until September.

Personally I thought it was a snore. Nintendo actually brought out something new. Sony brought out something that brings the complexity and expense of the Wiimote and the Kinect in one user-unfriendly package. Didn't really see any Sony specific games that really wow'd me.

I have less than 0 interest in handhelds and I've now owned a Nintendo Wii Product - so I basically know I'll likely never own another Nintendo product at this point.

That being said, Sony's motion controller - while a copy is a pretty fucking accurate one - I'm skeptical but it's got a chance I suppose.

Stay out of the party if you want, but if can tell me that the 3DS doesn't seem at all compelling then you're a bit dead or crazy on the inside. It's Virtual Boy 2: Electric Boogaloo except it's all bizarro and doesn't seem to suck. That thing sounds like a blast, especially paired with gamecube-esque graphics and smarter passive wireless connectivity.

It's a handheld :/ it's pretty much as simple as that - I don't game on the go and I think a lot of people don't game on the go. If I lived out in the burbs and caught a 2 hour train to work each day, sure I'd actually consider one but honestly they just don't interest me and I find them a little embarassing to boot.

I'm with you on this one. whenever I see someone playing a hand-held game in public, the first thing I always think is that the person is so pathetic that they don't even know how to function without video games. this does not apply to people on buses / trains / planes / any form of transportation.

You know, handheld games can be played at home too. In fact there are enough unique, excellent titles that they deserve dedicated gaming time at home. It's not just for people taking the bus.

do you just like being difficult for the sake of being difficult? There are many quality games that are only available on the DS, PSP, etc. How can you not understand someone wanting to play them?

I'm not a huge follower of handheld gaming, but even I know there are TONS of excellent games out there for handhelds that have nothing to do with puzzles or minigames. I don't know how you guys could have missed them in the years you've been paying attention to video games in general.

I'm not being difficult for the sake of being difficult, my opinion has come up in this thread and I'm defending it.

*I* don't like handheld games - if other people do, more power to them, I'd much much rather use a PC or a proper console than a handheld. I'm not the only one that feels this way - I simply can't see them as anything but a toy, it's just how I see them.

Some people aren't trying to min/max their gaming time to have the highest fidelity experience, they use their gaming time to have fun. Fun can be had regardless of the number of polys on screen or the processing power of the platform. Put another way, why would you play an indie game instead of a proper AAA title? Look at how many people enjoyed Flotilla, and I bet some even played it on their PCs where they had huge AAA titles installed that they could be playing instead. Why would they choose to spend time playing that instead of the AAA title they have installed? Because it's fun for them.

It seems to me a lot of the hand held games are very watered down, so to speak. There have been a few I enjoyed immensely, but largely they're very short and have lackluster mechanics. That fact, coupled with the 5" vs 55" screen make me lean pretty far toward consoles, myself.

They're fine to play at home. Some of the best games come out on the things because they're a cheaper platform where publishers can more likely afford to try something new. Infinite Odyssey is one of the best classic style good jRPGs to come out in so long. Might and Magic Puzzle Clash. Advance Wars. The good Final Fantasy games. I could go on and on.

Embarassing? Everyone games now. I wouldn't do it at the table of a nice restaurant but I think any social stigma you're seeing is all in your head.

I'm the dorkiest dork there is, my clothes, my body shape, my movie tastes, tv shows and shit - I guess I just have that handheld stigma and I can't shake it. I see handhelds as going that bit too far for gaming. Even if it is in the house and not outside in public it just seems too much for me.

I mean at least I'm not saying "nintendo handhelds are for kids but sony ones are cool!!!" - it's not that, they both don't do it for me.
Also, Sony had Kevin Butler at their conference - that alone is awesome.

Dunno dude. It's just a computer in a different format, and this one has a really cool, unique format I think. I mean you carry a pocket computer already, you have an iPhone. What's another one, especially if it offers something nothing else does? In both terms of content and form. I would finally love to see if a 3D sonic game could actually work. Shining force would look so awesome. I mean it goes on and on.

If it has a chance at all, it's a very very slim one. The promise of move (for the core gamer) was that you could do a sword and shield. Or pull back the string of a bow and arrow while aiming. That's what we all want but since the base configuration is just one controller, who is going to risk developing those titles? So we're gonna have a bunch of simple party games that use the main controller and Sony shoehorning the controls into all of their games that are made specifically for a traditional controller.

So for the casual, it's going to be a party-game focused Wii since the base bundle only has one controller. It's hard enough to sell 1 accessory but now Sony wants to support 3 different Move configurations therefore developers will just go to the base sku (like they develop 99% of 360 titles to be played w/ no hard drive).

And for the hardcore, it's going to be like Half-Life 2 on consoles, where there is nothing technically wrong with the controls and they're still quite functional but if you notice, all the levels are made for keyboard and mouse in mind (with how they are set up). The gravity gun is practically useless since it was made for the precision of the mouse. So while it will be cool to play Socom 4 and Killzone 3 and all the other games with move, you're gonna return to the traditional controller after you get over the newness factor.

Nintendo was really the only one of the 3 that came out and announced new games. The 3DS, Zelda, Kirby, Icarus, Vitality Sensor. While Sony and Microsoft focused on the Move and Kinetic which was more of a hrmm ok but both were shown in detail last E3 and the move even more so at GDC. I mean the ESPN thing is cool for Xbox, as is Portal 2 on PS3, but meh.

I don't think so. I mean I guess it depends on how much faith you put in the MOVE. Personally I think the move is pretty gimmicky and won't be a long term success.

Sony's presentation hinged on the move and 3d. Arstechinica had a good article about why the 3d isn't going to be as great as sony hopes it is.

          June 17, 2010 5:40 AM

I feel like MOVE is the Wii was hardcore gamers wanted. The precision it provides coupled with the graphics of the PS3 should open up quite a few doors. The price tag on the controls is pretty steep, but MOVE alone is making me consider buying a PS3.

I am a super asshole when it comes to picking apart console graphics and I swear to god I thought they were playing the PC version. Much like what Crytek is doing with Cryengine 3 on consoles, I can't even fathom how good these games are going to look on PC.

The console iteration is good I think, I don't want a new Xbox or PS3 anytime soon, they are still good to go. On the other hand Wii and PSP need updates if they can keep the price point down. Nintendo's line up was solid fucking gold, GT5, MGS Rising, Gears 3, Bulletstorm, Portal 2, Rage, Journey... I can say that even if everything I wanted wasn't shown or announced I am happy as hell about how it has turned out.
