Splinter Cell Getting Free Weekly DLC

14
Free downloadable content for the just-released Xbox 360 edition of Splinter Cell: Conviction is to arrive on a weekly basis, publisher Ubisoft has revealed.

The flow of free goodies kicks off tomorrow, April 15, when a new gun--MP7A1 Machine Pistol--will be available as an Xbox Live download via the game's EXTRAS menu.

Addition content will follow every Thursday, according to Ubisoft, with future goodies including "new weapons, skins and even a brand new Deniable Ops map."

[Update - 3:20pm CST] We're hearing that the MP7A1 is available a tad early.

I hate to break it to you NO one has broken the DRM and it will not be broken.

Yes it sucks that they have it in there but if it works why would they remove it, there sales for PC are 100% legit. Hate it all you want that is a feat in its self.

Now don't get me wrong it blows monkey balls but no one is stealing their software for the PC because of it.

Didn't someone say The Settlers was cracked too? I think the DRM is mostly to squeak out extra sales before its cracked for those who cant wait.

        *cough*

I'm trying not to sound like too much of a douche here. I'm not defending the pirates, but you're wrong. Legions of people are currently playing stolen copies of Assassins Creed 2 and enjoying the full game without the need to be connected to the internet and Ubi's servers all the time.

Was the DRM "broken"? No, but it's been bypassed via a server emulator. You can play the whole game, you can save, you can do side missions. You don't have to be connected to the internet to play.

I wouldn't say it's been "cracked" but at this point, the basic model of their current DRM scheme has been figured out and bypassed.

I buy my games but I will admit to getting cracked exes when I want to keep a game installed for long periods of time without hunting for the cd. And I really dont like the idea of their new DRM not saving and just shutting down if your connection or their servers hiccup once so will look into that crack too probably.

I dont condone pirating games, but cracks for games you have bought, sure.

        It doesn't work.

        That's the problem.

The DRM servers were broken for days when AC2 came out, and Settlers was having severe problems just last week.

People who bought the game (sometimes referred to as "customers") were unable to play it.

Whether it is preventing copyright infringement is an open question; there are numerous reports of the full game being cracked, at least in the case of AC2. Regardless of that, when legitimate users are unable to play the game, that is an unacceptable situation.

Yeah its been cracked or"emulated" if you will already, now every game that comes out with this DRM will be that much easier to emulate

Not so, actually, since they are using values retrieved/streamed from the central server which you wont be able to get if you havent done EVERYTHING in the game and that it will be different for each game.

It looks like this DRM will hold for a while, its just a matter of time when it will be cracked.

When you have permanent internet connection, stable, a $60 (a new standard I believe for Ubisoft's PC games), and their servers are online all the time, then maybe its all good.

I think you greatly underestimate these kind of peoples persistence, what so hard about playing a game all the way through and recording every value? nothing thats what.

"100% of their sales are legit"

Assuming for a moment that it's true... 100% of their diminished sales are legit. What's better? 100% of 5 legitimate sales.... or 50-70% (or w/e) of 50 sales?

Also with piracy aside, legitimate customers haven't been able to play their game 100% of the time because of server fails on Ubisoft's end. So the DRM does fail whether it's preventing piracy or not.
