Officially announced just last week, the iPhone and iPod touch rendition of Apogee Software's classic first-person shooter Rise of the Triad is now available via iTunes.

At $4.99, the Mobilia-helmed port packs the original five playable characters and four game episodes, with word that a free "Extreme add-on pack" will soon add "deviously different tricks, traps and treachery not seen in the original Triad."

"Extreme Rise of the Triad has over 40 additional maps with some of the most brain-bending puzzles and devious traps offered in the Triad series," say the companies.

An updated trailer showing the mobile version in motion accompanied today's news:

Between ROTT, Wolf3D, DOOM and Abuse, my iPhone is quickly becoming a portable 486 for me. Good times.

ROTT is on the iphone? Goddammit, I want it on a console so I can play it in pixelated bigscreen glory.

I remember I had to convince my dad to buy a stick of 4MB ram (which was like $150 or so!) so that I could play Doom smoothly, and without using some sort of memory emulator. In that context, these phones are crazy these days. If you came out with an Iphone back then you'd be accused of stealing technology from the unseen alien menace.
