Morning Discussion
Fun fact of the day: Wednesday was actually invented in 1873 by sly entrepreneur Egbert Hieronymus V. Echrang, though most wrongly believe it was actually 'the druids.'

Well, sort of. They do a lot of their work post-release, but the stuff they gather post-release is also information that can be used for future titles, so you could call it an early stage research for coming projects.
But it is also marketing, so it's a bit of a blend.
A good community manager can do quite a lot of good stuff for a game.

like many titles in the gaming industry, what people do varies wildly, so anyone making an assumption about any title and the work that person does (producer is another excellent random title to talk about) is really difficult. also it matters hugely whether you work with the developer or with the publisher and your proximity to each of them.

This is a dumb subthread. Everyone who works at a developer or publisher is important and even if they don't make the content of the game directly they are responsible for its success and failure. That includes IT guys who manage the computers that the devs use, marketing people who promote the game, people who manage the salaries of developers, people who deal with distribution, selling the game to retailers, producers who keep everything on track, QA and testers who make sure the game works and makes sense and so on and so on. There's a fuckton of people needed to make a game and make it successful and it's a lot of work. Just because you don't write or create assets doesn't mean you're not helping the game.

They should pull in dahanese and/or warcrow and just merge Idle Thumbs and Played.
The thing that makes Idle Thumbs work so well is that the three guys are in the room at the same time as opposed to a phone call over Skype. So they need someone else from the area.
Granted I've lost track of where everyone is and so it may be a nontrivial task to get everyone together. It's kind of like when people not from Texas figure that people from Dallas and people from El Paso must be next door neighbors. -

Too true, plus the "out of the game" podcast has a decidedly off putting air, maybe its the skypiness of the whole thing maybe its certain members not really acting like they want to be there let alone join in the conversation.
The gamers with jobs guys make a great show with their skype based podcasts however.

I was 2nd pick for a Community Manager job where my only experience was that I had volunteer-moderated their forums for two years or so and apparently done a good job of it. Stuff like that can get you considered for it. Their first pick took the job though so I didn't get it, but I got a much better position about a year later instead. :D
Otherwise working in some sort of customer support, game-related or not. Or marketing and such.
