Stardock has released new screenshots of its upcoming PC fantasy 4X strategy title Elemental: War of Magic.

"The best way I can describe the battles is that they're tactical with XCom being a major inspiration but designed to be relatively short," wrote Stardock CEO Brad Wardell. During the battles, players can zoom far down to the front lines (see below, left). Wardell also noted that while city growth in the turn-based game is largely cosmetic, players will be able to zoom in to view their towns, and design roads that connect them.

Elemental is slated for release in February 2010. A beta test is scheduled to begin later this year.

      Yeah, I love cel-shading

It's not cel-shaded; cel-shading typically consists of both outlining of objects, and shading that gets clamped to a small range of colors. See the wikipedia article for a better description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel-shaded_animation

There is outlining here, but the shading is smooth.

Outlining doesn't really have anything to do with it, it's totally separate. Wind Waker is, I think, still the best example of cel-shading in games, and there's no outlining there. But yeah this game isn't.

Anyway, terminology aside, I really like how Elemental looks. Very unique and appealing style.

The art-style is actually not really doing it for me. Apples and oranges I guess. :/

I dig that retro (for lack of better word) look as well.

Reminds me of Prince of Persia on the PS3.
