We received four new screenshots from Sins of a Solar Empire, Ironclad's upcoming 4x space strategy game. Publisher Stardock also let us know that a new beta build will be released June 21st. As with the first beta, this will only be open for people who have pre-ordered the game through TotalGaming.net.

I really wish the space ship flight simulator games like Wing Commander, X-Wing, and Starlancer would return =(. Every time I see a space game that ends up being a strategy game, a part of me dies inside (not that I dislike them, I just get my hopes up for a brief moment).

The Freelancer community is still alive and well at http://www.lancersreactor.com

Is there a mod that makes the game a bit more interesting? Seriously it is really cool for the first 3 hours, then you realize there's no point in having quick ships since a big ship can outrun it and out gun it, the combat control scheme is weak sauce, you can pretty much always escape from any encounter just by running since every ship goes the same speed, and there's a general lack of upgrade options and whatnot in general.

It really is mind boggling that given the popularity of those franchises, the popularity of things like BSG, and the industry's propensity for sequels, that we have not seen a new space sim like the ones you mentioned in years. Yeah, there's been the X series and that other relatively new one, but the main space sim franchises have just been hung out to dry (though my theory on X-Wing/Tie Fighter was that with the SWG space expansion they wanted people to subscribe to that for their Star Wars fighter fix, hopefully that is effectively dead we'll actually see a new one sometimes).

On topic: Game looks damn cool anyway!

I think some of this just has to do with the lack of joysticks. The sales team can look at how many computer users have joysticks compared to how many have mouse+keyboard, and make a decision that it's better to go with an FPS or whatever.

There was an interesting read (I think I saw it linked from digg?) about the death of joysticks =/ One of my fondest memories of PC gaming is playing Starlancer with my MS Sidewinder.... sigh.

Joysticks were one of the best reasons ever to play PC games, 10 years ago. There are many experiences that just don't work with standard controls.

Definitely an issue on the PC, but the 360 and PS3 controllers both essentially have two joysticks. Should be easily able to get flight controls as well as some sweet in-cockpit freelook while guaranteeing everyone has it. I think an old-school space sim would easily fit on a controller.

I don't get the motion sensing kick for flight games on the PS3 and Wii though. I'd fear for lots of lives if real pilots flew by waving things around in front of them. Now an attachment that hooked the wiimote onto a joystick base, THAT would be fantastic.

Our best hope is the East. They still make them in Russia, Poland, Germany ... sadly those often suffer from lack of polish. Better than nothing, though!

        No pun intended.

I think you're overestimating how many people want Space flight sim games. I'm not saying that a good game wouldn't necessarily be successful, but at this point it's a niche genre at most.

However! It still amazes me that a Episode 1/2/3 Star Wars space-sim hasn't come out. You attach the Star Wars name to that shit and it will sell like hotcakes no matter what.

I sacrifice small animals daily to try and sway the gods to make freespace 3.

Freespace 2 was such an amazing game. The word "Sathanas" is permanently etched into my mind as a result of playing that last level.

Wasn't there a remake of Freespace somewhere by fans?

The first game was ported into the freespace 2 engine if thats what you mean.

X3 is available for $20 on Steam and there's a fairly active mod community for it. I just got it and am having a hell of a time figuring out what to do.

It's a lot less structured than something like Freespace or even Freelancer though.

It's the prettiest space sim I've ever played, anyway. I don't think there's any multiplayer though.

You might want to read this stuff if you're interested, I only started playing it last night and don't know enough to give you a decent opinion at this point.

Yeah, it's much more of a sandbox style game than freelancer or freespace. Much steeper learning curve too, but if you can figure it out, it's pretty fun. You know, if your into that kind of thing.
