Late Night Consoling

41
The other day, I stumbled upon this article that breaks down the ergonomics of game controllers, going all the way back to the Atari 2600 and even looking at the gamepads of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I remember as a youngin' the very first thing I'd like to do when I got a new console was just hold the controller and see how it felt. When the N64 was fast approaching and demo kiosks were being placed in stores, I grabbed that controller and just fiddled with it for a few minutes before even playing Mario 64. Surprisingly, this article slightly bashes the N64's controller; I feel it's the best one designed for the games it was played with. Although if I recall correctly, many of you think the Saturn pad as the best by far, which may be why SEGA has re-released it for multiple platforms, including the PC and PS2.
  • Microsoft Licensing the Xbox

    [xbox]

Bill Gates has been touring Japan, dropping bits and pieces of information at each of his stops. First he mentioned that future revisions of the Xbox 360 could include an HD-DVD drive. Now, he's saying that Microsoft is considering licensing the tech and software of the Xbox. I'm not sure what purpose the tech could serve outside of playing Xbox games, but it's definitely an interesting decision.

  • Devs Have Seen Revolution Controller

    [nintendo]

Nintendo's crazy exec that kicks ass and takes names recently spoke with EGM and talked at length about the Revolution's top-secret controller. He said, "The thing that I always find surprising...is when you sit down and share the innovation with them, just how excited they get." He then talked about how the Revolution will allow you to play NES, SNES, and N64 games and how the controller must adapt, hinting at its design. Going slightly off-topic, he did make it sound like that the Revolution will be priced a good deal lower than its competitors.

  • Major Delay for Revolution?

    [nintendo]

Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, talked to investors today and he dropped a bit of info on the Revolution's elusive release date. "There is no possibility that the Revolution's launch will fall behind by too much, but there might be some small changes [in its release schedule]." So far, Nintendo has only stated a 2006 release with hints at launching near the PS3, but this message doesn't bode well for Nintendo fans.

  • Top Gun Roaring onto DS

    [ds]

It's pretty surprising that there's no War of the Worlds game, but another famous Tom Cruise flick will get a new game. Mastiff Games announced they will release Top Gun DS, based on the 20-year-old movie. It'll come packed with 10 missions and multiplayer support for four players. No release date is set.

  • Japanese All-Star Devs Contributing Tenchu Maps

    [psp]

The upcoming PSP entry in the Tenchu series will feature maps designed by prominent Japanese designers outside of From Software, who are the developers of the game. A name most of you will recognize is Yuji Naka, creator of Sonic The Hedgehog. The other three are Shin Megami Tensei creator Koji Okada, Level 5 president Akihiro Hino, and ChunSoft president Koichi Nakamura. They'll be created with the in-game map creator and released over the Internet.

Saturn Pad was and is the best 2D controller by far, yeah. I almost liked the N64 controller, but I wish the dpad hadn't existed and the stick had just been on the side. I found putting my hands so close together very uncomfortable for prolonged periods of time.

The Saturn pad felt like most of the Saturn games played: cheaply thrown together junk

Let me guess: you're ranting out of your hairy arse.

The Saturn controller was and is still one of the best controllers for 2D games.

indeed the saturn controller was the closest thing to having an arcade controller. I could play mortal kombat 3 and all the buttons were layed out how they were in the arcade, it was awesome.

Just what I would point out...if you thought any Mortal Kombat game was a basis upon which to judge anything....well then, welcome to ignoreland.
