Well, everyone can chill out on the refreshing like mad for a little bit. We've got an official release time now for the Counter-Strike 1.6 BETA / Steam2.0 release. Here's the word from Valve Software:

Steam Beta 2.0 begins today at 3 pm Pacific. The beta is open to the public, anyone can join by downloading and running the 4MB install applet.
For the first few days, this beta will include the coming versions of Counter-Strike (1.6) and Team Fortress Classic. Further updates to these games, as well as additional content, will be made available to participants throughout the beta. Steam is a broadband platform for the delivery and management of digital content. More information on Steam and this beta can be found at www.steampowered.com.

We'll have the install application on Fileshack.com at release time. That will be 5pm CST (Shack time)

Steve Gibson is the cofounder of Shacknews.com. Originally known as sCary's Quakeholio back in 1996, Steve is now President of Gearbox Publishing after selling Shacknews to GameFly in 2009.

Steam in its final form shouldn't require broadband. But they're purposely corrupting the cache so you have to re-download it every time during the betas. It's to stress test it. It's like having a CS file release all the time!

so we will have to redownload cs 1.6 every single time we want to play? I don't understand..

Essentially yes, during this beta period thats why you need broadband. For people who beta'd last version would know this. It's not the whole game but its a small portion of it, doesn't take long, UNLESS YOUR ON MODEM

I think 1.0 dealt with the stress test, I dont see why they'd do it again.
