Godfall Fire & Darkness expansion and PS4 launch coming in August

The Gearbox Software E3 2021 showcase was a little light but one bit of news from the event was the announcement of the first Godfall expansion, Fire & Darkness. Also revealed was the PS4 version of the game with cross-gen play with PS5. Godfall for the PS4 and the Fire & Darkness expansion are scheduled for release on August 10, 2021.

Godfall had the privilege of being one of the few launch-titles available for the PlayStation 5 when it was released on November 12, 2021. Being referenced alongside intensely hyped games like Demon's Souls and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales gave Counterplay Games' Godfall a bit of that hype through the sheer force of their anticipatory gravity.

When Godfall finally made its way into players homes through their brand-new next-gen powerhouse PS5s, the reception was a bit underwhelming from critics and fans alike. In the Shacknews review, we found some value in the game's visuals, combat, sound, and enemy design but took issue with the overall narrative and world focus. Godfall got some much needed quality-of-life improvements and content updates in December 2020 and February 2021 to alleviate some of the community's concerns.

Today Counterplay Games and Gearbox Software announced the first paid expansion for Godfall, Fire & Darkness, planned for release in just a couple of months. Alongside the expansion, Godfall will also get a PS4 version with full cross-gen play for those that are still unable to snag a rare PS5 when stock trickles to retailers. The Gearbox Software E3 2021 presentation didn't have much in the way of new announcements but the big winner is the Godfall player base.

Godfall for PS4 and the Fire & Darkness expansion are both set to release simultaneously, on August 10, 2021. Check out our E3 2021 topic page for all of the coverage you can handle throughout the day and the weekend.
