AMD held its latest showcase event, where they detailed their up and coming products. It was during this stream that the company revealed the Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 series processors. A part of this new line is the Ryzen 9 5900X CPU, which AMD is declaring “the world’s best CPU.” It will be the first product in AMD’s new line of CPUs and will be available for purchase this November.
AMD CEO and President Lisa Su spoke to the quality and power of the Ryzen 9 5900X. The CPU features 12 cores and 24 threads and is capable of up to 4.8 GHz boost speed. This will allow the CPU to work with efficiency at rapid speeds. Described as “the ultimate enthusiast processor,” the Ryzen 9 5900X sports a 19% higher IPC than the 3900XT. The Ryzen 9 5900X has a TDP of 105 watts, while taking advantage of several Zen 3 core improvements.
AMD then showed a demo of the Ryzen 9 5900X vs the 3900XT, AMD’s current highest-end CPU. Using Shadow of the Tomb Raider as a benchmark, we see the average FPS jump from 141 to 181. This 28% increase comes after changing only the CPU and keeping everything else exactly the same. AMD shares that similar leaps in quality can be seen in League of Legends, Battlefield V, and CS:GO.
The AMD Ryzen 9 5900X will launch on November 5, 2020, and costs $549 USD. The October 8 AMD event also revealed a beefier CPU and briefly showcased the Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs.
