State of Decay 3 announced for Xbox Series X

The July 2020 Xbox Games Showcase was home to several brand new announcements surrounding the Xbox Series X. One of the reveals was confirmation of State of Decay 3, a new installment in Microsoft’s zombie survival series. State of Decay 3 will launch on Xbox Series X and PC.

State of Decay 3 was announced with a cinematic trailer, which can be seen below. In the trailer, we see a woman with a couple of others in a camp, somewhere in the forest. After spotting a wolf, she leaves camp to follow the animal. We then see the wolf, deceased, being devoured by what looks to be a zombified deer.

Though the trailer doesn’t show any game play, it gives us a couple of key clues as to what we can expect in State of Decay 3. First up, the setting. The trailer is set in a very snowy, forest-like area. This is a departure from the setting we saw in 2018’s State of Decay 2. Next, the zombified deer. In past games, the only zombified creatures we got were humans. With this trailer, it looks like developer Undead Labs is teasing zombie animals to be making their debut with State of Decay 3.

The trailer doesn’t reveal a release date or release window for the game, but we know that State of Decay 3 is officially in development. When the game launches, it will be available on the Xbox Series X and PC. The game will also be free for those subscribed to Xbox Game Pass.
