Sea of Thieves private servers are coming in a "mid-term" update

If you've been waiting patiently for Sea of Thieves to finally patch in private servers...keep waiting.

You don't have to wait too much longer, though. Rare will indeed be adding them soon enough for eager Sea of Thieves fans, according to executive producer Joe Neate in the latest developer update.

“We’ve talked in the past – and more recently – about the potential for private servers in the future for Sea of Thieves,” said Neate. He also mentioned “that’s on our mid-term roadmap, so it’s not in the immediate stuff that we’re working on at the moment. But we definitely intend for private server support in the future." As part of the big picture, Neate believes private servers would help to allow community-run tournaments like Sea of Champions to "happen more often" while making for simpler setup.

Neate told us earlier in the year that the team isn't exactly interested in providing PvE servers, however, noting that those thoughts were simply from his perspective.

"In the future, allowing more friends to come together and play in the world in the kind of way that they want, we want to figure out a way to do that but we’ve got some thinking to do," he concluded.

Sea of Thieves players can look forward to October's Fort of the Damned update, which is set to debut October 16. The new content drop will feature a "spooky surprise" in terms of in-game pets, as well as new items for the Black Market and Pirate Emporium. It's a great time to be a Sea of Thieves fan, natch – even if the game doesn't have private servers just yet.
