Everyone's favorite Shacknews article is back!

42

Hey Shacknews! The First Post! feature is back, and this is my first time running it. This article was designed to kick off conversation on our Shacknews Chatty forum back when we did not have a rolling 18 hour expiration on threads, but I have decided to bring it back after requests from the community. This article will go live every day, around 10:00 AM ET.

How goes your Blizzard boycott? Some players from American University held up a "Free Hong Kong, boycott Blizzard" sign during a collegiate Hearthstone broadcast. Please take a look.

Sounds like Facebook really learned a lot from 2016. The company rejected a request from Joe Biden's campaign to remove Trump ads containing false information. I wonder what the Shackers in the daily Trump Dump thread think of that? (Turn on political filters to see that massive thread)

Californians are bracing for potential power outages in the bay area as PG&E tries to prevent forest fires or something. Be safe NorCal Shack!

In case you missed it, we have several reviews that hit the site over the last few days:

What are you up to today, Shack? Let us know in the comments section. If you haven't, be sure to subscribe to Shacknews Mercury to help support our site for as little as $1/month. Here's a picture of Lola to start off your day.

Lola is the best.
Lola is the best.

Am I doing this right?

klev and I have been playing Castle Crashers in switch. It is now the 3rd copy of that game that I own, but just as with all things, the switch is the best console for it.

It’s exciting for me. We haven’t played a vidya game together since snipper clips.

Hoping to re-borrow Link's Awakening, I only got about 5 hours into it, I'm not sure if I've done 2 or 3 dungeons, one thing felt kind of like a half-dungeon? Or maybe I'll put more time into the Gameboy Color version now that I've well overshot that save... which was only at the first dungeon as the next day the remake was announced; I do suppose I have my backlit GBA SP all charged up.

The other day I played a few hours of Smash Bros. Ultimate as it had been about six months but I saw Banjo & Kazooie dropped... so, obviously I had to get back to it. Ran a bunch more of the classic modes which is always fun.

Towards the end of my night I finally unlocked Luigi (I have something like 75 characters), and had an amazing run with him in Classic getting up to 8.6 but then got wrecked by Dracula. He is the boss I hate the most mostly because of that stupid high up limited hit box and enormous amounts of invincibility frames seconds. I used to hate the hands the most, they're still my second least favorite boss, but Dracula just isn't fun for me at all.

Got a bunch of Spoopy games installed and ready to go. Finally gonna play Detention, though I'm still annoyed I didn't pick up their newest game before it got pulled because Xi Jinping is a whiny little baby who can't take the slightest criticism.

Probably gonna play Paratopic first though as I know that's fairly short and light on violence which... I don't know, I'm not really feeling horrific/torturous graphic violence right this moment (hilarious graphic violence is pretty much always fine though).

Also I'm looking forward to playing John Wick Hex, that looks rad but I have yet to purchase it. Tempted to wait for a Switch version as it feels like it would be a perfect fit for the console.

Yeah, I've tried to get in 3 times, I don't even have all the characters yet and I just can't make it through. I think I'm done with traditional turn based RPGs, at least if they don't have compelling characters and/or story.

Still Dead Cells and CounterAttack, LoL and Destiny 2, but I got back on some Grim Dawn recently.
Pisses me off how the Grim Dawn DLC was handled though. I can't use it with my existing characters, it branches them off into a "DLC Version"; I cannot play DLC chars with Vanilla chars. I cannot add a DLC class to my existing single class vanilla char (had the second class slot still open). Also the DLC has my chars at the levels and equipment at the time I purchased it I guess (5-20 levels ago, depending on char).

In Destiny 2 it feels weird to be "weak" again. I guess 'normalized' would be better. Also strange to have no gear superior to any others in power level. And I'm not wasting an upgrade on 750 -> 760.
I've only really gone in to check out any obvious changes; feels about the same, but I have occasional instances of 'too much shit going on/blowing up' video lag now. Also something feels off with the viewport / FOV. I upped it to the max of 105 (which I would like to note, is NOT 110), but still something not right.

As a plus, I feel that when enemies are shooting at you, the projectiles are a lot more ... readable? visible? slow moving? better models and/or lighting? I'm not sure, but projectiles coming from your front arc (in particular, though it seems improved overall) look way better to me now.

Reading through the reviews of Indivisible and John Wick Hex on my phone, I feel that the score box is completely in the wrong place.

Putting the score box below the author blurb, the tags, the Lola and the related stories might as well mean it doesn't exist. The link to the chatty post is also too low in my opinion.

Is there a chance you're going to look into this? I know the text should stand for itself and the score box shouldn't be emphasized. But I really feel it's in the wrong place right now, essentially unlinked from the review it summarizes.

I've come up with a way to get the top lols, and posted about it over the weekend, although I didn't get much response. https://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=38961335#item_38961335

I wouldn't want to have these post be under my account. I will provide my program and code to someone who would like to run it, or I'm considering possibly making an account just for these summary posts that the program makes. (And I'm looking at the 'terms & conditions" to see if that is allowed)

If a few people would like to see a return of my version of those posts, I'll figure something out. Also let me know if you have any suggestions for my formatting of those posts, or things I could add.
