Sony, Microsoft, Google, & more team up to fight climate change

Published , by Josh Hawkins

The climate changes our planet are currently undergoing is a huge red flag for many and today some of the biggest names in the gaming industry are taking a formal stand to help fight it by forming the Playing for the Planet Alliance.

We already reported on some of the changes that Sony is making to the PlayStation 5 to make it more environmentally friendly, however other big companies have taken a stand with the PlayStation developer. These companies include household names like Microsoft and Google, as well as development studios and publishers like Ubisoft, Supercell, Wild Works, E-Line Media, Strange Loop, Internet of Elephants, and Creative Mobile and Reliance Games.

Together these companies along with Twitch and Niantic (who will use their communities and platforms to spread the message) will work together to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 million tons by 2030. According to a press release shared on the UN Environment website, these companies have all come together under the Playing for the Planet Alliance.

Inger Andersen, Executive Director, UN Environment Program stated, “The video games industry has the ability to engage, inspire and captivate the imaginations of billions of people across the world. This makes them a hugely important partner in addressing the climate emergency.” Andersen continued, “We are encouraged by the commitment of these gaming companies, which shows recognition that we all must play our role in the global effort to lower carbon emissions and effect real change towards sustainability.”

Clash of Clans developer Supercell Games is one of many joining the fight for Climate change.

You can learn more about the UN’s plans to harness some of the biggest companies in gaming to help fight climate change by heading over to unenvironment.org, or by checking out the current plan for Playing for the Planet over on the alliance’s official website. This is definitely a noteworthy cause for game developers to support and we’re happy to see so many big names taking a stand for the planet. No matter what your stance on climate change is, we can all agree that we haven’t been the best stewards of this beautiful place that we call home, and it’s nice to see people taking a stand to make things better.
