In Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, you are likely going to fail and die a lot in the early going. The game gives you very little direction on what to do, and everything in the world is trying to kill you. This sort of situation usually sends gamers scrambling to save as often as possible, but that’s not a particularly easy task in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. This guide will show you how to save and backup your save file if you find it’s necessary.
There is no way to manually save your game in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. The game does save when you sleep in a bed, and includes an auto-save function, but gamers looking to create a manual save in-game before trying something risky are out of luck. Much like another hardcore survival game, The Long Dark, you cannot load a previous save in-game when you want a do over.
As someone who likes to tinker with just about everything, it’s imperative that I know my save file location and how to make a backup for each of the games on my PC. While many services do feature a cloud backup, that often can’t be trusted. I recently went big on my PC upgrades and opted to do a full format and Windows install and lost a game that was supposedly backed up via Steam. I lost about 75 hours of progress. In case you’re planning any big PC maintenance, backing up your save file can be done via the following file path.
Once in the correct folder, you should see something along the lines of Savegame0.sav, with the zero possibly changing to another number based on the number of saves you have. Simply copy this file to a safe location on your PC or in an online storage service, such as Dropbox. If you lose your save in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, this file can be copied back to the original folder path shown above to restore your save.

Now, this is the part where I tell you that this shouldn’t be used to prevent yourself from having to start the game over again through natural gameplay. Part of the experience is that if you let all the members of your clan die, it’s permadeath and you must start over. There’s really no point playing a game about the uncertainty of evolution with a safety net. The thrill of knowing that it could all be over if you make a few wrong moves is part of the experience.
