The developers behind Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 had a special surprise in store for fans tuning into the Gamescom 2019 opening presentation. To give fans an early taste of the upcoming release, Activision announced that an open alpha test would be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4 this week, and in yet another surprise, the downloads have already opened. Here's how to download and play the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2v2 Gunfight alpha on PlayStation 4 right now.

Good news: The only requirement needed to jump into the Call of Duty Modern Warfare alpha test is a functioning PlayStation 4 with internet access. As opposed to a closed test meant only for PlayStation Plus subscribers, the 2v2 Gunfight alpha is open to all PlayStation 4 users, just as long as they can access the web.

Downloads for the Gunfight 2v2 alpha opened earlier today, several hours before the option was expected to come online, so there is no further need to preload the Modern Warfare alpha.

To jump in on the action, simply power on the PlayStation 4 and search for "Modern Warfare alpha" in the PlayStation Store. If you're interested, here's the Modern Warfare 2019 2v2 alpha listing on the PlayStation Store website. The overall download size is around 37 gigabytes, so be prepared to set aside some time for installation if you haven't already.

Beyond that, Call of Duty fans should move on the alpha quickly, as it's only available over the weekend, from today, August 22, through Sunday, August 25. After that, the development team has a planned Modern Warfare beta test coming in September, with the game's expected release date still set for October 25.

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare PS4 alpha is only set to run through August 25, but the early release does at least give players some extra time to check out the Gunfight 2v2 mode.
