The fan-favorite Poison Mushroom returns in Super Mario 2 under a slightly different name. Here's where to find it.

Super Mario Maker 2 offers players loads of different items to utilize through Course Maker, but one particular item is proving hard to find. It's the Rotten Mushroom, and it stands in for what players remember as the Poison Mushroom in previous Super Mario games. The Poison Mushroom is indeed in Super Mario Maker 2, but not only is it now known as the Rotten Mushroom, it also carries with it a dangerous new ability.

Super Mario Maker 2 Course Maker | Where is the Poison Mushroom?

The Rotten Mushroom, sometimes referred to as the Poison Mushroom, can be found within the Items menu in the Super Mario Maker 2 Course Maker mode. However, like a few other somewhat-hidden items in the game, players have to fulfill a few conditions before the Rotten Mushroom can be used.

It looks like a zombie!

Primarily, the Rotten Mushroom is only able to be placed into standard Ground theme levels set at night. That's right: In order to place the Rotten Mushroom into a level, players are required to use the Ground theme, and set their custom course at night.

Here's how to change between night and day in Super Mario Maker 2 Course Maker.

Assuming those conditions are met, the Rotten Mushroom can be found in the purple Items radial menu among items such as coins, stars, and the Fire Flower. If players are creating with a different theme, the Rotten Mushroom will be replaced with a standard 1-Up Mushroom.

As for the item itself, both the Rotten and Poison Mushroom monickers are appropriate. Instead of granting Mario extra power or making him larger, the Rotten Mushroom powers-down players, and even chases them around the course. Placing a Rotten Mushroom into a custom course is a sure-fire way to keep players on their toes.

The Poison Mushroom isn't in Super Mario Maker 2, but the Rotten Mushroom is, and the two items are virtually identical. If anything, the only different is that the Rotten Mushroom is more sinister.
