How to change characters in Dr. Mario World

Published , by Kevin Tucker

Like any good Nintendo game, Dr. Mario World has several different characters and Staff members for players to unlock. New characters and assistants can be purchased with coins, the in-game currency earned for completing Stages, and players are going to need a whole lot of coins to unlock each character before they can start playing with them. Here's how to unlock and change characters in Dr. Mario World.

Dr. Mario World | Unlock and change characters

Before players can change characters in Dr. Mario World, the characters themselves will have to be unlocked. Fortunately, it's a simple process. Aside from passing level 20, players need to accrue a set amount of coins — 4,000 coins to be specific — simply by playing the game, then spend those coins to unlock a new character.

Fair warning: It's not currently possible to unlock a specific character in Dr. Mario World. Characters unlock entirely at random. To make matters worse, it's common for players to spend their coins only to unlock characters they already have. Fortunately, if that happens, the character will level up. Once the character reaches the maximum level cap, it will be removed from the pool.

Each character in Dr. Mario World has a two-percent drop rate.

Here are the ten characters available in Dr. Mario World:

The process of unlocking characters and assistants is straightforward. Once you have enough coins, press the Characters button on the bottom of the main screen. It's the one second from the far right, next to the Stages button. Within that menu, head into the Staffing options and look for the toad. Once there, offer up your Coins to open the door and reveal a new staff member. It might be an assistant, or it might be a character; characters in general have about a 20% drop rate, with each individual character making up two percent total.

Aside from coins, it's also possible to purchase additional Dr. Mario World characters by spending a ticket or 40 Diamonds, the game's premium currency. Diamonds can be purchased with real-world cash, meaning a spin at the wheel of unlocking a new staff member costs about $5 per turn. Alternatively, players could spend $20 for the bundle of 250 Diamonds for 10 tries.

Dr. Mario World players will have to unlock new characters before they can use them. It costs 4,000 coins or 40 Diamonds to unlock a new Staff member, though there's no way for players to choose which character they unlock.
