Ion Maiden now called Ion Fury, releases next month

Ion Maiden, the old-school first-person shooter inspired by the classics of yesteryear, is coming out swinging with a new name: Ion Fury.

Not only does it have a new name, but it's also coming out next month. It'll be exiting Early Access and finally debuting with its full, complete release. Powered by the Build Engine that brought us classics like Duke Nukem 3D, Ion Fury is all about serving up hot and tasty nostalgic action with all the modern niceties, including quicksaves, headshots, widescreen support, and much more.

You play as Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison as you work to wipe out an army of cyber-cultists across the span of this gore-filled shooter. To celebrate its release, it's getting a special Big Box edition with a Bowling Bomb-shaped USB drive with a DRM-free copy of the game and soundtrack, a making-of booklet, a Bowling Bomb sticker set, a keycard based on the ones in-game, and a copy of the game for $59.99.

This name change comes after the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden brought a lawsuit against 3D Realms and Voidpoint, asserting that there "have been numerous instances of actual confusion with Iron Maiden fans believing that [3D Realms'] Ion Maiden products are related to Iron Maiden."

“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to rename our first-person-shooter “Ion Maiden” to “Ion Fury,” said Mike Nielsen, CEO of 3D Realms. “A lot of thought went into this, but most importantly it would be a disservice to our loyal fanbase and the fantastic developers, to drag out a long lawsuit. The amazing gameplay, interactivity and pure fun, is what makes Ion Fury a great game. Not the title.”

You can catch Ion Fury out next month on PC on August 14. Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch versions will be coming at a later date.
