Interview: Bringing the Terminator and Gears universes together

Published , by Sam Chandler

To say we’re excited about Gears 5 would be an understatement, and to further fan our hype, Shacknews got to speak Gears of War with Ryan Cleveland, Design Director for Multiplayer.

Right off the bat, Ryan confirmed that players would be able to play as not only a Terminator, but as kickass protagonist, Sarah Connor. This offer is part of the Terminator Dark Fate pre-order exclusive. Just in case you needed another reason to be hyped for Gears 5.

As for the game itself, Escape seems to flip the Gears of War formula on its head. Typically, Gears has been rather defensive, with players eking out control of a location one piece of cover at a time. Escape, however, is a far more aggressive mode, forcing players to constantly push forward at a faster pace than they might be used to.

The weapon systems in Gears 5 have received a complete overhaul for the new title. Players can expect to see new recoil patterns, updated reticles, and even damage numbers. While the damage numbers aren’t in the campaign, they are in the multiplayer modes. This will allow players to better track the damage they’re doing to opponents, but it has greater significance in the likes of Escape and Horde.

In these two modes, the player can select what character they use and what cards to equip. This is part of an upgrade system where the character improves over time through leveling up. The numbers will help players get a greater sense of the improved damage and how the character is evolving.

Gears 5 is releasing on Xbox One, Windows, and Steam in September. If you’re as excited as us about Gears 5, make sure you read Ozzie’s hands-on impression of Escape where he tried his best to carry his team to victory.
