One of the hottest JRPGs of this console generation has made the jump from the Switch to PC, as Octopath Traveler is now available on Steam.

JRPG fans, it's time to rejoice, as Octopath Traveler is now available on PC. Despite its lush retro-themed aesthetic, Octopath Traveler is one of the finest JRPG releases in recent memory. Of course, before now the game was available only as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. That is no longer the case, as Square Enix has just announced that the game is now available to purchase and play on Windows PCs.

Even though we just said it, it's worth repeating again: Octopath Traveler is excellent. The game's "HD-2D" art style keeps to the old-school two-dimensional JRPG style while adding in loads of modern graphical effects made possible through Unreal Engine 4. Even better, it has a rich narrative that weaves together the tale of eight heroes all on separate quests.

I wrote Shacknews' Octopath Traveler review personally, and the game quickly became one of my all-time favorites. Not only is it simply lovely to look at, its unique battle system requires a perfectly balanced (and downright addictive) blend of strategy, foresight, and adaptation. This is what I had to say about the game after its release back in July of 2018:

"Too many developers have tried and failed to capture the nostalgic and often magical feelings that players have for the JRPG genre. Pared-down retro releases and fluffed-up remakes come and go, yet none of them seem to get things exactly right. Fortunately, Octopath Traveler succeeds where other classically-styled RPGs fail: The presentation is spot-on, the combat is addictive, and the potential for party customization is tremendous."

Now that Octopath Traveler is available on PC, JRPG players who haven't yet jumped on the Switch bandwagon finally have a way to enjoy one of Square Enix's most beloved new properties. Players can pick up Octopath Traveler on Steam or make their purchase over at the Square Enix Store.
