Okay, let’s be honest here… for the most part, Apple is usually pretty good about making their devices look sleek. The iPhone looks great, the Macbook line-up looks solid, and the iPad design speaks for itself. So, it was a bit of a surprise when Apple released what can only be defined as an atrocious design decision with the new Mac Pro.
It’s been almost eight years since we saw the release of a new Mac Pro design, and this year’s announcement of the third-generation Mac Pro at WWDC 2019 was definitely meant to be exciting. Everything about the new desktop computer is enticing—from raw power, to sleek display options with the new 6K retina display—the actual appearance and design of the case, though… well that leaves a bit to be desired.
Of course, design isn’t everything when it comes to a computer, and a lot of people out there just don’t care what their case looks like. For me, personally, you can’t beat a good-looking piece of hardware, and the new Mac Pro just doesn’t scratch that itch for me. While the desktop unit looks like a bit of a cheese grater, it also appears to take some inspiration from architectural designs as well. It’s a weird combination, though, and overall leaves the entire machine looking a bit out of place in the office, at least based on what we’ve seen so far.
I get the appeal of stainless steel. I really do. Unfortunately for Apple, case creators have already proven that you can make your case look good, while also providing the same level of airflow and overall cooling performance that you need to keep an expensive machine like a Mac Pro running smoothly. I’m not exactly sure why they chose the design that they did, outside of pure accessibility and airflow options, but it could have used a little more paint to spruce it up.
We’re not the only people that think the new Mac Pro looks a bit weird, though. Plenty of people on Twitter have taken to their timelines to talk about the design decisions and how weird it looks. Of course, plenty of people are also excited about the third-generation Mac Pro. I guess that means we’re at a bit of a toss-up, honestly. While the new Mac Pro doesn’t look all that stellar in the design department, the overall accessibility of the case more than makes up for it.
