Customization is huge in the PC building community, and SteelSeries is offering a new keyboard with a deeper level customization than players are used to finding. The latest tech comes in the form of the SteelSeries Apex Pro keyboard, a device the company calls "the fastest keyboard of all time" thanks to new proprietary OmniPoint switches which can notably be adjusted to change key travel.
"The Apex Pro is the biggest leap in mechanical keyboards since the invention of the mechanical switch over 35 years ago," the official SteelSeries website reads. "Each key can be adjusted to meet your preferred sensitivity level, whether it’s for gaming, work, or anything else."
Along with the ability to customize individual key stroke heights, the Apex Pro reportedly offers eight times faster response, five times faster actuation, and two times the durability offered by "conventional mechanical keyboards." For those who are already familiar with German-made Cherry switches, those claims certainly sound like a boast. However, SteelSeries is one of the premiere computer gaming peripheral manufacturers on the scene, so we're inclined to believe the company has done its homework.
Given how much freedom is given to PC players already, seeing customizable key travel distances on the SteelSeries Apex Pro is sort of like staring into Pandora's Box. How much key travel is too little, or too much? Still, the mere fact that players can now fine-tune their key-pressing experience should make for a more interesting time for all, especially for those who don't mind tinkering.
Watch for the SteelSeries Apex Pro to release sometime around June of 2019. It's numpad-lacking compact cousin, the Apex Pro TKL, is expected to start shipping around September. More information on both keyboards can be found over on the SteelSeries website.
