Jax, Kung Lao, and Liu Kang join Mortal Kombat 11 roster

Among the strongest suits of developer NetherRealm Studios is fan service, and that's exactly what series followers were treated to in the latest PlayStation State of Play livestream event. In particular, the State of Play stream showcased a new Mortal Kombat 11 trailer where classic fighters and new contenders butt heads, including the likes of recognizable series fighters like Jax, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Kano, and Liu Kang.

What happens when classic Mortal Kombat fighters face off against one another? The latest trailer answers this question immediately by showcasing a flawlessly executed punch to the testicles. Those old-school fighters certainly like to stick to their guns, even if the art of execution has jumped in leaps and bounds in the more than two decades since Mortal Kombat first released to the general public.

Even after a single viewing, it's clear from the Mortal Kombat 11 Old Skool vs. New Skool trailer that MK11 is shaping up to be the biggest and best release the series has ever seen. If nothing else, it must be said that the attitude is spot-on: Cage telling Kano to "go back to the 90s" is at once a humiliating insult and a promising throwback to the series' roots. No doubt some of us wish we could go back to those simpler times, even if Genesis owners poked fun at the egregious amount of "sweat" in the Super NES version of the title.

There's now less than a month left before Mortal Kombat 11 releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PCs. Be on the lookout for errant blades and emasculating fists when MK11 releases on April 23, 2019.
