The dominant mediums at SXSW are always film, tech, and music, but the event has been closing out the last few years with the SXSW Gaming Expo. Last year, SEGA hosted a panel and dropped a couple Sonic related bombshells. Following up the reveal of some new Team Sonic Racing gameplay, the team revealed the Team Sonic Racing Overdrive animated feature.

The panel and those watching via stream were treated to a roughly five-minute look at the first part of the Team Sonic Racing Overdrive multi-part feature, called Part 1: Dangerous Distractions. The clip showed off an intense, well-animated race between a few of the game's teams. It also featured some sabotage by Eggman himself, Dr. Robotnik. The full clip of Part 1 will be going up on YouTube today. Here are the characters making an appearance in the feature:

  • Sonic
  • Tails
  • Knuckles
  • Bigs the Cat
  • Amy
  • Rouge
  • Chao

Last year during SXSW Gaming Expo 2018, SEGA revealed Sonic Mania Plus, which added two new playable characters, and also teased an in-development project that turned out to be Team Sonic Racing. SEGA's SXSW Gaming Expo 2019 Discovery Stage panel this year was hosted by SEGA/SEGA of America staff members Jasmin Hernandez, Aaron Webber, Jun Senoue, and Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.

Spread out over three days, Friday through Sunday, the SXSW Gaming Expo is home to a full schedule of panels and meetups alongside the exhibit floor, which is riddled with new and in-development video game projects. The weekend is concluded with the SXSW Gaming Awards, celebrating the best of the best in the last years of games.
