Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is Niantic's next mobile AR game

Niantic has unveiled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, its next licensed game, and it looks to be a title in the same vein as Pokemon Go.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a collaboration between Portkey Games and Niantic, and will allow players to explore the real world while casting spells, participating in challenges, and becoming the wizards and witches they've always fantasized about being.

The game will allow payers to work as a member of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, a group that works to uphold the Ministry of Magic's Law that proclaims wizards can't share anything about magic or the magical world with humans, or even divulge that it exists.

Here's how the story goes so far:

"A calamity has befallen the wizarding world, causing artefacts, creatures, people, and even memories to mysteriously appear in the Muggle world. Witches and wizards from across the globe must come together to solve the mystery of The Calamity, overcome the confounding chaotic magic that surrounds these “Foundables,” and return them to their rightful place, keeping them safe from Muggle eyes.

Your journey begins as a new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, established by the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards for the purpose of investigating and containing The Calamity."

Containing the Calamity is where you come in. You'll travel around the world picking up "Foundables," which you'll find at "Muggle locations" around the world. Something like Poke Stops, you'll head to these things and fill up your Spell Energy to keep playing. It sounds a lot like Pokemon Go obviously, which shouldn't come as a surprise since it's another Niantic joint. There will also be special AR versions of stores like Ollivander's Wand Shop.

Later on in the game's life, multiplayer Wizarding Challenges will be added as well as special villain battles that let folks gang up on Death Eaters, Dementors, and other ne'er-do-wells from the Harry Potter universe. It sounds like an absolute blast.

If you're down to play, pre-registration for Android users is available right now. There's no word on when the game will officially debut, but hopefully it's on its way out soon, as the world is in dire need of some new Harry Potter content.
