The sleeper must awaken, at least as far as Funcom is concerned.

The Conan Exiles developer has struck a licensing agreement with Legendary Entertainment and Herbert Properties LLC to develop video games based on Frank Herbert's Dune, which is amazing news for all the fans of the other great sci-fi series out there. Raise your hands. Both mine are raised.

Legendary is gearing up to release its upcoming film adaptation of Dune next year (it's finally happening, can you believe it?) and it seems like a great time to go ahead and trot out some new games based on the series. It's been quite some time since we had anything like that grace retail shelves, so it's good news to hear that something is finally being done with the license.

The Dune reboot, which is being directed by filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, features a very impressive cast with the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem on board to appear in the film.

Development is set to begin in Funcom's Oslo, Norway studio later this year, ahead of the film's 2020 debut.

“Funcom has a strong history of working with beloved sci-fi/fantasy intellectual properties including our bestsellers Age of Conan and Conan Exiles,” said Funcom CEO Rui Casais. “So many of us at Funcom, myself included, are huge fans of Frank Herbert’s work and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate withLegendary to bring the iconic Dune universe to life for gamers all over the globe.”

It remains to be seen whether the games will follow the movie or stick closer to the books, and whether they'll utilize the likenesses of the new actors tapped to appear in the film. Either way, it's great news for Dune fans as we look forward to a great couple of years for the fantastic franchise.
