Fortnite revenues hit by 48% sequential drop in January 2019

It looks like Fortnite's crown could be slipping.

According to SuperData, Fortnite's revenue on all platforms had a sharp decline, with a 48% dip all told month-over-month in January. While the game's sales are still up for year-over-year, it appears the revenue is starting a steady decline. Not long ago, Fortnite was enjoying a peak month in terms of revenue in December. Digital spending is also down across all platforms by 6% year-after-year.

Meanwhile, other games were seeing some declines as well. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate unit sales ended up declining sharply, with digital units estimated to be down 83% from December, indicating that sales were "more front-loaded than usual." In-game spending did increase month-over-month, however, thanks to the Fighter Pass.

Epic Games has been pumping out new content left and right, however, and in fact just announced that Season 8 for the game would end up featuring a pirate theme soon. But Fortnite is far from the only battle royale game in town, especially with the debut of the recently-released Apex Legends, another free-to-play title that comes packing some of the same run-and-gun excitement of Fortnite, but with a variety of different aspects to play through and enjoy.
