Apex Legends tops 25 million players, new legends coming

Respawn Entertainment's battle royale Apex Legends climbs over another milestone and sets the stage for the game's debut season of content.

Respawn Entertainment is probably getting tired of popping champagne at this point. In the recap of the first week since free-to-play battle royale Apex Legends launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, Respawn revealed that the game has been played by over 25 million players. The peak concurrent player count reached over 2 million.

Vince Zampella of Respawn Entertainment shared the news in a blog post, also setting the stage for the free-to-play game's next wave of content. In March, players will be able to purchase the Apex Legends Battle Pass, which will give owners a shot at unique cosmetic items. Special limited Valentine's Day loot will be introduced sometime this week as well. Here are all of the details shared in the post:

  • First up, the Twitch Rivals Apex Legends Challenge. Sponsored by our friends at Twitch, the Rivals Apex Legends Challenge will take place this Tuesday the 12th and next Tuesday the 19th, with 48 of the biggest streamers on Twitch competing live in Apex Legends. We’ll be co-streaming all the action from our Apex Legends Twitch channel here:
  • Then, later this week we’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day by introducing some limited-time Valentine’s Day themed loot, so all you (Apex Legends) lovers out there keep your eyes open.
  • Don’t forget, Season One kicks off in March, introducing the debut of our Battle Pass as well as new Legends, weapons, loot, and more.

At launch, Apex Legends features eight total Legends, with two of them requiring either 12,000 of the Legend Tokens that are earned by playing the game or 750 Apex Coins. The Apex Coins can be purchased in bundles that range from $9.99 for 1,000 to $99.99 for 11,500 (10,000 standard with 1,500 bonus coins). None of the Legends will be locked behind a Battle Pass.

It only took Apex Legends three days to reach 10 million total players and one million concurrent. This 25 million player milestone is likely not the last, but the real test begins when Respawn Entertainment sets the bar for their ongoing support of this free-to-play shooter with the new content released in March and the team starts working on sustaining a sizeable audience. Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates.

Good for them, pretty addicting even though I'm bad. I hope they are able to keep up the momentum with new content, even if its rehashes of Titanfall assets.

That twitch tournament seems lame though I thought they would be playing against each other on a custom server but they're just going to see who gets the most kills queuing against randoms?

I can't for the life of me see how Shroud could possibly lose this one, him+skadoodle+another usually account for 30-40+ kills per match which are usually wins.
