Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the Titanfall series, dropped a bombshell on the industry last week when it leaked that a new battle royale experience from the studio was in development. Set in the Titanfall universe, Apex Legends got a full reveal today during a Twitch live stream. First and foremost, Apex Legends is available to play right now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Apex Legends, thus far, looks like a blend of Quake Champions, Overwatch, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout, but with a handful of its own unique elements. One of those is the focus on squads of three with characters, called Legends, that have unique abilities. Players can also redeploy into other areas of the map after dropping into the match and there's a respawn element as well.

The battle royale genre is incredibly popular these days and major franchises are incorporating the game mode into their experiences, one way or another. Call of Duty was one of the first existing series of shooters to deliver on this, breaking new CoD ground with Blackout in Black Ops 4. DICE will be doing the same with the Firestorm battle royale mode when it comes arrives in Battlefield 5 in March.

Apex Legends from Respawn Entertainment is available for free right now on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates.

EA is a garbage company run by garbage people that destroys good creative developers. EA can burn, I wish and hope they do.

I had a chance to play a quick round, warning, i don't normally like the Royal concept.
Apex borrows speed and gun play from T1+T2, and those parts feel pretty solid, a good oompf to the weapons. There is lots of small tactical variants that will require loads of time to get 100% to grips with.
Imho the big difference is the 3 man squad and the clear focus on team play with built in easy ways to help and communicate with each other, this is clearly not a ffa party, i think this game could become big.

This is the first BR that I think can actually become an esport in a big way.

With the classes, and marking, it kinda reminds me of Evolve, which is great. Evolve had fun gunplay.

I really think it's foolish to try and compete with Fortnite. I'm looking forward to anthem.

The sheer enthusiasm I am seeing for this game across forums and gamers I know leads me to believe they stand a good chance at making this a success.

It's not like they have to "take down" Fortnite to make it popular enough to be profitable.

Yes, because anthem has no competition at all

Fortnites audience is kids, everyone plays fortnite. Apex is clearly aimed at an older age group that wants a more straight fps shooter feeling, that isn't pubg

This is competing with Pubg and Overwatch and is superior to both.

It seems to me they are focusing on a different market share instead of competing for Fortnite's audience. Let's just see where it leads, we can all benefit from the impending "free game" wars coming soon.
