Housemarque has been all about arcade shooters and bullet hell for a long time. However, it's diving into the new hotness for its next game. During the Kinda Funny Games Showcase, Housemarque unveiled an all-new entry into the battle royale genre called Stormdivers.

Stormdivers takes players onto a hostile island, where they compete for survival. To aid them, everyone has jetpacks equipped, adding some verticality to the proceedings. However, the island also appears to be filled with its own natural dangers.

Beta sign-ups for Stormdivers are currently up and running on the Housemarque website.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

And they think they can pick up some money from the BR genre? This was a bad idea. I don't see this going anywhere, there are already too many BR clones out there trying to scrape up a buck.

If they’d just done a twin-stick BR game, that would have been enough to keep their fans happy, keep their budget down and pick up some competitive players. Or they should have cloned Rocket League, if they had to clone a popular online genre.

People laughed at Epic for thinking they could make inroads with a PUBG knock-off, but at least Epic had a long history of online multiplayer experience. I’m guessing originally, Housemarque thought they could just do another one of their classic games with online play, saw that getting into that end of development requires a whole different infrastructure and then someone told them they better grab as high as they could for the cash to justify the investment. :/

I hope it works out for them. Everyone having jet packs will definitely not be enough.
