Sony Japan wants to "meet global standards" with new sexual theme policy

Sony's policy regarding sexual themes has shifted recently and the company is finally speaking up on the more restrictive changes.

Niche Gamer reports that SIE Japan Asia President Atsushi Morita was asked about the new sexual theme policy and the approach to balancing freedom of expression and non-kid friendly games. His response is below:

“About the censorship, we tried to meet global standards,” Morita said. “Regarding the balance of the freedom of expression and safety for children, it’s a tough problem to deal with.”

Steam, on the other hand, has shifted to a significantly more open approach to touchy themes in games added to the storefront. For instance, the platform allowed its very first completely uncensored erotic visual novel and the game, Negligee: Love Stories,  features the following:

In a previous story, we reported that Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal was delayed on PS4 due to a change in policy regarding sexual content. The game features an Intimacy Mode where players can spray down and grope girls and Sony wants the mode removed from the game. Publisher PQube canceled the western release of Omega Labyrinth Z due to the new policy and other future titles by Japanese developers could be impacted in a similar way. Omega Labyrinth Z includes mechanics simulating sexual stimulation of younger looking women, a "shame break" mechanic that removes clothing, and the ability to pour honey on the women and allow a dog to lick it off them. The young appearance of the women was a concern in Senran Kagura Burst: Re:Newal as well.
