Magic Leap's John C. Gaeta on the future of spatial computing

Published , by Asif Khan

Shacknews caught up with John C. Gaeta at View Conference 2018 to chat about Magic Leap, AR, VR and spatial computing. Gaeta has worked in the visual effects space for quite some time and shares a lot of his opinions on what makes AR more compelling than VR and the challenges that face developers going forward. Please take a look at our video interview for more.

Magic Leap released their Magic Leap One dev kit earlier this year. The $2300 developer's kit underwhelmed many people as the field of view was worse than VR head-mounted displays. Magic Leap also faces competition from the likes of Microsoft's HoloLens.

One thing that makes Magic Leap unique, according to Gaeta, is their work in the area of spacial computing. This is essentially the building block of the future of augmented reality operating systems. "This is the real world, and the real world is unpredictable," said Magic Leap SVP of Creativity. "A new mechanism has to be put in place to understand what is happening out there."

John goes on to discuss how an AR user could walk out onto the corner of the street and have an array of applications available. Location, transit, and countless other AR experiences could be triggered. "Mixed reality is going to be prolific through all of those sectors. There are two things going on: the platform itself needs to accommodate this adaption to what's happening at the moment and who's there." It will be all about the context of situations according to Gaeta.
