The Summer and Fall Skirmishes have come to an end and Epic Games is gearing up for the next leg in their Fortnite esports series. The Winter Royale Tournament is an open competition and starts this weekend on November 24. The Winter Royale Finals will have a total of $1,000,000 in prizes up for grabs.

Here's the schedule for the Fortnite Winter Royale Tournament:

  • Winter Royale Qualifier (Open): 11/24/2018 - 11/25/2018
  • Europe Winter Royale Finals: 11/30/2018 - 12/1/2018
  • North America Winter Royale Finals: 12/11/2018 - 12/12/2018

Epic Games announced in May plans to fuel Fortnite esports initiatives with $100 million and have been rapidly delivering ever since. The team has put together a few tournaments, but the effort to improve the process continues. In the Fortnite v6.30 update, a few bug fixes were put in place to enhance the online tournament experience:

  • Bug FixesFixed an issue in Tournaments where players were not being matchmade against opponents with similar scores. This will greatly increase the difficulty of matches as players earn points. Note that players with high scores during a session may experience longer matchmaking times as we search for suitable opponents.
  • After roughly 4 minutes of searching for opponents with similar scores, players will be placed in the best match available.
  • Fixed an issue where tournament scoring would sometimes require restarting the client to update.
  • Fixed an issue where Victory Royale’s would incorrectly appear as regular Placement points in the score summary.
  • Fixed an issue where players would occasionally be granted a point incorrectly at the start of match, and it would disappear after the match.
  • Fixed an issue where teammates would sometimes fail to queue into a match together. Fixed an issue where matches would start with fewer than 80 players.

Good luck to all of the Fortnite Winter Skirmish participants. Experiences like this make a case for Fortnite and Epic Games to win our Do It For Shacknews end-of-the-year award, but they have some stiff competition.
