Sony skipping E3 in 2019 for first time in trade show's history

A statement from the company may allude to an entirely new event being revealed in the future.

For the first time in 24 years, the PlayStation brand will not have a presence at the E3 trade show.

Variety reported the disappointing news, citing an ESA press release as confirmation that Sony and PlayStation won't be attending E3 2019. Sony executive Shawn Layden confirmed that PlayStation Experience would not be happening to close out 2018, stating that its because the team doesn't have enough new content to warrant bringing people together. The same could be the reason why the company is pulling out of E3, especially because Days Gone will have already launched by the time the event comes around. Sony gave this statement to Game Informer:

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part 2, and Death Stranding are the next three major PS4 exclusives and, unless new projects are revealed during The Game Awards 2018, may be the featured titles as the PS4 rides into the sunset. While this signals a change for Sony's physical presence at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo, the company could still go the route of Nintendo and have a prerecorded event streamed during the festivities.

Not surprised. The ESA price gouged the crap out of those companies, good for them, but thats a lot of space in West hal. Now

You think they'll still attend "small" shows like PAX?

Despite their cancelling of their own PS experience (or whatever they call it) next year, I believe that they (and the other console manufacturers) are going to shift more towards their own events like Nintendo Direct.

This, plus possibly even more involvement with the VGA’s. It’s practically E3 with awards now, anyway.
