Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has finally released to the world and everyone is diving into the new Blackout mode, but some players are having trouble even booting the game thanks to a fatal error. Fixing Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s fatal error on PC is not straight forward, as there is no one-and-done fix, but there are a few things players can do to hopefully get Call of Duty back up and running.

How to fix fatal error in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a well-polished game, though there are reports of players receiving some odd fatal errors, despite other games functioning well. Players looking to fix the fatal error problem should begin by trying the following options:

  • Update graphics drivers
  • Ensure no firewalls or anti-virus programs are blocking the game

If the fatal error persists after these basic procedures are performed, players should more on to the more drastic options:

  • Scan and repair the game using the Blizzard App
  • Set the game executable files to “Run as administrator”
  • Reinstall Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Use the Scan and Repair function to see whether any Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 files are corrupted.

Scanning and repairing Call of Duty requires loading up the Blizzard app and clicking the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 logo on the left side. At the top-left-ish side of the program, click the Options drop-down and select “scan and repair” and then begin the scan. This process can take a while, though it is undoubtedly faster than reinstalling.

Locate the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 executable files and set them to run as an administrator.

The next solution to the fatal error is to set the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 executable to “Run this program as an administrator”. To do this, locate the directory where Call of Duty is installed – for most users this will be under the C: drive. There will be three executable files:

  • Black Ops 4 Launcher.exe
  • BlackOps4.exe
  • BlackOps4_boot.exe

Right click a file and select Properties, select the Compatibility tab, and click “Run this program as an administrator” which is located in the “Settings” box. Repeat this process for the other executable files. Relaunch Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and if the fatal error occurs again, attempt the next solution.

The last and most drastic solution for the fatal error is to uninstall Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and wipe all trace of it from your system, then redownload and reinstall the entire game. If this option does not fix the fatal error, then players should reach out to the Call of Duty Twiter account or seek assistance through the official Activision website.

Hopefully these options have solved your Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 fatal error and you are now back in the game and earning victories! Be sure to check out our guides on how to unlock characters in Blackout and how to unlock the Pack-a-Punch in Voyage of Despair.
