Dead by Daylight teases Japanese urban legend as next killer

A new trailer has fans of the asymmetrical horror experience scrambling to figure out the next addition.

The list of available playable killers in Dead by Daylight is about to grow once again. The game currently features original creations based on classic horror films along with official licensed killers like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. There are three additions slated for September 2018, December 2018, and March 2018 and September's new face appears to take from Japanese urban legends. Check out the "First Cut" trailer below.

Many of the fans in the comment section of the YouTube video theorize that this teaser isn't highlighting the blade-wielding killer as the next addition to Dead by Daylight, but is instead teasing the urban legend of Kuchisake-onna or the "Slit-Mouth Woman." As told on Wikipedia, the woman is an evil being appearing in Japanese ghost stories dating all the way back to the Edo period. She's mutilated by her husband and returns as a vengeful spirit. In the original legend, she covers her mouth with a cloth mask, a fan, or scarf. She asks potential a series of questions before either slashing them ear to ear or cutting them in half, which could play into the killer's abilities is Dead by Daylight.

There are a couple translations for the Japanese dialogue in the trailer, but here's what YouTube user Queen Roawr shared:

"Everything is meaningless, my daughter. All people die. The more time passes, the greater the suffering becomes."

Dead by Daylight is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. We'll have to wait and see what the Dead by Daylight team at Behaviour Digital Inc has in store, so stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates.
