Gamescom 2018: Overwatch debuts Busan control map and D.Va animated short

Overwatch has deployed a new control map to the PTR, as well as a new animated short centered around everyone's favorite mech pilot.

Blizzard has been busy at this year's Gamescom, bringing something for each of its games. But the publisher has something particularly new for Overwatch, as Blizzard revealed a brand new Control map.

Busan pays tribute to one of Blizzard and Overwatch's most loyal regions, as it's modeled after the South Korean port city of the same name. Some of the locales will look familiar to anyone who's visited the area. Players will be doing battle along the city's shore, as well as its central metropolis. Sanctuary, Downtown, and MEKA Base will act as the map's three main districts.

The reveal of MEKA base also sets the stage for Overwatch's latest animated short, this time centered around D.Va. This short reveals the mech pilot's origins as a world famous esports superstar, as well as a skilled mechanic. Viewers can watch her do some fancy flying, as she risks her well-being to save the world.

Those looking to try out the Busan map can do so right now on the Overwatch PTR. Look for it to hit the wider PC servers, as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in the future.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Dva short was really fun! I was hoping it would be Zenyatta :(

New map is gorgeous tho, and on PTR today! I like how each point seems to have its own theme.

While I have maps I like less than other maps in OW, I gotta say Blizzard generally does an outstanding job of balancing them and making them look good while still performing well.

Crap, I even looked for this before posting.

It wasn't as impactful as most Blizzard shorts but it kills me that even their "misses" are better than 95% of all animated stuff out there today. Blizzards storytellers are absolutely amazing.

It was basically a character piece. It contrasts with the characterization of D.Va in the game and her "public" persona with the actual character. Also it introduces us to the next hero with "Friendzone".

          Please don't start that.

I know what I posted comes across as me seemingly knocking the short but I'm really not, I just don't know what word to use here besides "impactful." Story-wise it's absolutely perfect and shows a lot of the character behind D'va that you don't get from the game at all (Making her seem ambivalent with in game emotes and voice lines always seemed like a miss to me).

It’s a beautiful cinematic from Blizz as always but honestly it was rather boring from a lore stand point as really other than seeing that M.EKA is a team comprised of 5-6 young Koreans and seeing the location of the base nothing significant happened or no significant background info was dropped.

I was hoping this would explain better how she made the jump from pro gamer to omnic fighter or show a pivotal moment that shows why she decided this or during an invasion she hops into a Prototype M.EKA unit and fights that way or something.

All this went to show was the M.EKA unit in lore has actual flight capabilities instead of just simple boosters which now has all the D.VA mains drooling...

All she and her friend had to do was intercept Winston's Overwatch recall or accidentally watch as it could've been meant for a person on the M.EKA facility that was former Overwatch and this spurs here to reach out to Winston.
