How do I import my previous saves into The Walking Dead: The Final Season?

Published , by Ozzie Mejia

Telltale Games is ready to conclude its Walking Dead series with The Walking Dead: The Final Season. For those who have followed Clementine's story over the years, they may have jumped across different platforms over the course of the past three seasons. After all, The Walking Dead has spanned an entire console generation.

So that leaves the question: Is it possible to take a Walking Dead save across platforms? That answer is yes... and no, according to the Telltale Support page.

When you start up The Walking Dead: The Final Season for the first time, you will be given the option to either import a local save or use the "Check for Choice Data" option.

Are You on PC?

If you're running The Walking Dead: The Final Season on PC, whether it's Steam, GOG.com, or any other DRM, you should be good to go. If you have a local save, go along your merry way. If not, you're still fine, regardless of the platforms you've played the previous seasons on. The PC version will import all cloud saves with no restrictions. Simply create a Telltale account on the Telltale Games website and enable cloud saving.

Now it should be noted that if you originally played the first two seasons of The Walking Dead on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 and still need to import those saves, you'll need to make sure you're signed in to your Telltale account first. Blow the dust off of your PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 and boot up your copy of The Walking Dead: Season Two. Select "Save Files" from the main menu, find your save file, and select the "Upload" option. Use that save file to either play through The Walking Dead: A New Frontier and catch up or skip ahead to The Walking Dead: The Final Season and have the Story Builder fill in any remaining blanks.

Not every save can be used, however. If you played the first two seasons on PlayStation Vita, you are sadly out of luck and will need to use the Story Generator to recreate your story as best as possible. Ditto for anything picked up from the Windows Store. If you played those first two seasons on iOS, you'll have to upload your save file manually to the Telltale website.

Are You on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?

Ah, the ugliness of the console wars. If you've played any of the previous Walking Dead games on an opposing console, you are out of luck. Even if the full save files are uploaded to the Telltale cloud, a save file from a PlayStation platform cannot be used on an Xbox One version of The Walking Dead: The Final Season. That also goes the other way, so there's no using save files from Xbox platforms on a PlayStation 4 version of the game.

This will also be true of anyone using saves from The Walking Dead Collection. If you picked up this collection on one console, you cannot switch to the other.

Did you play the previous three seasons on PC, iOS, or Android and are looking to make the jump to consoles? You are more than welcome to make your selection between PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Both of those consoles will accept cloud saves from those aforementioned platforms.

Once your save file is uploaded, you should be good to continue Clementine's story right where it left off. If there's anything missing, the Story Generator can fill in any blanks. With all of that out of the way, enjoy The Walking Dead: The Final Season.
