As a special promotion for E3, id Software and Bethesda are offering a free-to-play trial of Quake Champions during the week of the annual conference. The best part? Download the trial this week, and you'll be able to play the game for free, forever.

Quake Champions community manager Joshua Boyle took the stage at Bethesda's annual E3 showcase to make the announcement. Boyle ran down the Quake franchise's two-plus decades of competitive play and its role as a premier esport. The announcement that Quake Champions has, in effect, entered free-to-play—provided you download this week's promotional F2P trial—status could be what the game needs to rocket-jump out of Early Access and welcome droves of new players.

To get an idea of the Shacknews staff's hands-on impressions of Quake Champions, check out our preview from the game's initial foray into early access in 2017. If you want to delve into the storied history of id Software and the Quake franchise, settle in with Rocket Jump: Quake and the Golden Age of First-Person Shooters, one in a collection of Shacknews Longread features.
