Battle royale games are the hottest thing out there right now, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that someone took a classic platformer and morphed it into something resembling one of the more popular battle royale titles out there. YouTube Kaze Emanuar did something totally insane (and totally awesome) with Super Mario 64, taking every single map in the game and linking it together to create one massive open world. From there, he's worked out a mod that turns the game into something not unlike a round of Fortnite Battle Royale. It is, in a word, genius.

The footage Kaze Emanuar has recorded is of a work-in-progress, but the very talented creator has managed to cobble together something very impressive here nevertheless. After Mario falls from the sky at the beginning of the game in the mod, players can navigate him to any spot on the map they choose. You can then guide him through various regions via the Wing Cap, cannon, or other methods.

Right now, the mod is still in single-player mode, and it's only a proof of concept piece of software just yet, but it's got a lot of promise. Emanuar has done an excellent job of weaving all the worlds together in a plausible manner that makes sense for a battle royale game -- all that's missing are the gameplay mechanics that bring it all together. Hopefully he'll finish it up and we'll see the finished product soon.

What kind of features would you like to see in a Mario-themed battle royale title?
