Sega Game Gear Sold One Game in Q1 2018, According to the NPD

Someone bought a Game Gear game in the year of our Sonic lord 2018.

The Sega Game Gear was an excellent handheld, and I'm still using mine on a regular basis. I love to play Defenders of Oasis, for one, a childhood favorite of mine. We haven't heard a lot about the Game Gear in some time, unfortunately, but that doesn't make it any less cool or useful. It looks like plenty of others feel the same way, too, because someone bought a brand new copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at retail price this year for Game Gear. Yes, someone purchased a retail-priced copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear in 2018, and it landed the game on the latest NPD Group report. You're not hallucinating. This is real news.

Analyst Mat Piscatella from NPD caught this strange nugget and posted it to Twitter, where he was understandably baffled. Nothing weird about some Sega fan wanting to get his Sonic on, right? And full disclosure: I'd buy the game at retail price at a register if I found it buried somewhere, lost to the sands of time, as well. My money is on a derelict Kmart.

Some suggestions include Toys "R" Us as a possible culprit, which makes sense given its recent liquidation sales. I've purchased some extremely old titles at those stores before, and things certainly slide under the radar. It remains to be seen, however, where the sale was made and what kind of circumstances it happened under. Piscatella remains shooketh, however. Hopefully he gets to the bottom of things soon. Inquiring minds want to know the story behind this one.
