Ashland University Introduces $4000 Fortnite Battle Royale Scholarship

A four-player squad will represent the university in an official collegiate eSports team.

Joining the likes of Overwatch and League of Legends, Epic Games is bringing Fortnite Battle Royale to higher learning. Ashland University in Ohia is offering $4000 in tuition to top Fortnite players as part of a newly formed eSports program and will be holding open tryouts in the future.

Ashland's cost to attend for a semester hovers around $10,000, so the Fortnite scholarship puts a pretty good dent in the total cost. As Forbes reports, winners of the open tryout will get join a four-player Battle Royale squad and put their skills to work for their education. As far as the application process for the tryouts, here's a video to give you a headstart on the process.

Fortnite's popularity has skyrocketed in recent months, even impacting grade school students after the release of the mobile edition of Fortnite Battle Royale. The eSports impact of the brand still has a ways to go, but efforts like Ashland University's will be instrumental in growth there.

Back in 2015, one of our writers pointed out that the reaction to Heroes of the Dorm suggested eSports acceptance is far off. In 2018, that acceptance has arrived and evolved as eSports has been established as an influential and powerful industry. With time, Fortnite and other newer games will start to host even more prestigious collegiate eSports events like the Overwatch National Championship. Big scholarships are not uncommon for well-endowed smaller liberal arts schools like this one, most students there get at least that much by default, many much more.

Nice way to get attention however.

      "In Ohia"

Is that the sister of Ohio?

To be fair ‘uhhiuh’ is pretty close to the average ohioans’ pronunciation of our state’s name :D

I stumbled across an ad at Ashland not so long ago for an esports coach. It had interesting job description and desired qualifications... anyway, looks like they filled it. Would be an interesting interview to follow up.
