9-Year-Old Boy Shoots Sister To Death Over Video Game Controller
A Mississippi girl has died following an argument allegedly centered around a video game controller.
A 14-year-old girl was killed this weekend when her 9-year-old brother shot her following an argument over a video game controller.
The incident took place last Saturday in a house in the Monroe County area of Mississippi. According to a report from CNN, the shooting occurred while the siblings' mother was in the kitchen making lunch for other children.
A statement from local Sheriff Cecil Cantrell indicates that the boy pulled the weapon, which the Clarion Ledger identified as a .25 handgun, from its storage place in a nightstand next to their parents' bed and used it to shoot his sister in the back of the head.
“The little boy — he managed to get a gun out of a nightstand there in the room there, and he just came over and shot her,” Cantrell said in a statement reported by the Washington Post. “I’ve been in law enforcement 30-some-odd years, and I’ve never dealt with anything quite like this. Not with children."
Elaborating, Cantrell expressed concern regarding whether or not the boy actually understood the effect that using a gun on a person would have.
"He’s just 9. I assume he’s seen [guns] on video games or TV," Cantrell said. "I don't know if he knew exactly what this would do. I can’t answer that. I do know it’s a tragedy."
Following the incident, the girl was rushed to Le Bonheur's Children Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. She died from her injuries around 6:45 pm the following Sunday.
A report from local news outlet WTVA states that the girl was a student at Tupelo Middle School. Other details are sparse, as the case is still under investigation. It's currently unknown whether or not the boy is in custody nor what charges he may face, but Cantrell has told CNN that the Sheriff's office is currently in talks with the district attorney.

I'm not sure what better purpose is served by posting this as an official news article coming from the Shack. The suggestion would seem to be that because it involved a video game controller, it's appropriate fare. On the surface that seems OK. But it ultimately helps legitimize the argument that something other than easy access to guns may be at fault, when easy access is in fact the problem (e.g. many other countries have video games but kids aren't shooting their siblings in the back of the head because guns aren't handed out like candy canes at Christmas).

I thought that at first too, "Why is this on Shack". On second thought though this is a topic that comes up fairly often in the chatty and so it's relevant to the audience.
Probably doesn't look great to the general public though (but I bet it gets lots of hits).
Fucking horrible situation though, keep those fucking guns well out of reach of children ffs.
