Valve Announces Artifact, a Dota Card Game, to Mixed Reaction at TI7

Surely some people in the crowd were chanting 'Boo-urns!'

23

Valve showed off a brand new teaser for Artifact, a Dota 2 card game, today at The International Dota 2 Championships. Take a look.

There was no gameplay shown, but it is always great to see that Valve is making a new video game. The crowd reaction at TI7 was a bit less enthusiastic than Valve might have hoped they would be.

The Internet meme folks are already jumping on the negative reaction wave with this especially funny animated gif making the rounds on Twitter.

A special shoutout to Andre Campos for the hilarious gif. We used a screen capture from it as our header image.

We will keep a close eye on any news surrounding Artifact as it develops. For now, the Internet has a lot of new Valve and Dota meme fodder to chew on. Join in on our community's discussion in our comments section.

I've said it before, but they need to clean house or something. How can you have a company with the history they have and hire people with zero fucking desire to work on those titles?

they can afford to drop a project if it starts being no fun, they aren't starving to grind through, but who knows, maybe in 2018 they will prove naysayers wrong

Dota has probably made more money for Valve than the entire Half-Life, Portal and Left 4 Dead series combined. Doing another Half-Life probably seems like an also-ran to the company - including leadership.

I don't hate them, but I've gone from seeing them as an amazing skunkworks company to seeing them as just a relatively benign digital distribution company. I know DOTA and CS is popular, but I don't play competitive multiplayer games. Even the Vive is lost on me since I had already backed the Rift.

I am looking forward to it!

My favorite digital CCG was the Everquest one; so I'm down. I wonder if they will do something crazy like scan cards in or action figures.

      Hearthstone just didn't grab me.

Can't call it a clone until you see what it really is. From what Day9 shared it sounds completely different.

Valve needs to get off their ass and make a video game production simulator / game dev tycoon game. Then they can lean back in their chairs and mock us openly.

I enjoy CCG's and Dota, so I will probably try it out and see what I think. If I was more into Warcraft, I would play more Hearthstone myself.

Card games are fun. Valve employs smart people who make cool games. Therefore, it seems to follow that Artifact could be an enjoyable game.

What is the problem here? Oh, it's not Half-Life, so I'm going to throw a tantrum.
