EVO 2017: Evo Japan 2018 lineup includes Street Fighter 5, ARMS, and more

Evo Japan is coming to Tokyo in late January with some eye-opening game choices.

Evo has lived comfortably in Las Vegas every July, but the folks behind the event are ready to branch out and head out to the far east. Evo Japan is set to run from January 26-28 from Tokyo and prior to Sunday's Street Fighter V top 8, viewers were treated to the full slate of games for the event.

Like Evo in the United States, the Tokyo event will be headlined by Street Fighter V. However, it's currently set to take place during the Capcom Cup offseason, so it remains to be seen how high the stakes will be for this particular tournament.

Look for these games to hit Evo Japan, as well:

  • Tekken 7
  • Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
  • King of Fighters '14
  • BlazBlue: Central Fiction
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • ARMS

The eye-opener here is ARMS, given that it's a fighting game in its infancy. It has had very few tournament outings, with arguably the biggest one being 2GGC: ARMS Saga two weeks ago. While some will raise an eyebrow over the omission of Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Japanese player base has proven to be notably smaller than that of the more recent Smash 4.

If Evo Japan is anything like Evo USA, then get ready for announcements to come throughout that weekend. Check out the trailer below.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
