Zynga being investigated over stock cash-in

Zynga's stock price did not recover from its tumultuous drop last night, as the company announced significantly worse-than-expected earnings. The stock is currently trading at $3.17, about 80 percent below its all-time high of $15.91. A few individuals have made quite a pretty penny, dumping the stock before this week's events, including CEO Marc Pincus.

Obviously, some investors are miffed. Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe have announced that they are investigating the company on behalf of Zynga stock purchasers, looking for evidence of any misdoing and insider trading.

Zynga announces The Ville, ChefVille, and FarmVille 2

Today, one of the world's biggest game publishers announced not one, but three extensions of one of the biggest gaming franchises ever. Yep, we're getting a whole lot of Ville games from Zynga.

The Ville is one of the biggest announcements from the company--a game so important it doesn't need a prefix. In this Facebook game, you'll be able to "create the home of your dreams," "choose your own career," and socialize with friends. It looks a lot like The Sims Social.

EA CEO says data-driven social games will 'eventually die'

The social games explosion caught many in the industry off-guard, with many traditional games publishers still trying to crack that nut. EA's efforts, which included the recent purchase of PopCap Games, has secured a number two position for the company. However, while CEO John Riccitiello admits they're still lagging behind the market leader, he also criticizes their data-driven, versus entertainment-driven, focus.

"The companies that are focused exclusively on social games think of themselves as data companies, analytics companies," he said. "They're not really in the entertainment business.

Draw Something adding branded words

The hit mobile game Draw Something is adding a new wrinkle to its revenue stream: branded words. Scattered among its more general dictionary will be product names. One of the first to bite was the National Hockey League, providing the NHL with mind share and plenty of fan-made drawings to tout on Pinterest.

Rovio rejected $2 billion Zynga acquisition offer

It should come as no surprise that Zynga is in the business of acquisitions, especially in the wake of the company paying roughly $200 million for Draw Something developer OMGPOP. But not every developer is keen on being bought, as Rovio apparently balked at the publisher's offer for more than $2 billion.

FarmVille 2 in the works, domain registration and resume hint

FarmVille is the poster child of the modern social games boom. While it may not be singularly responsible for Zynga's meteoric rise, the game has managed to turn millions of Facebook viewers into a whole new type of "gamer."

Zynga has dabbled in sequels before, as evidenced by Mafia Wars 2's release. But, could a sequel to their most iconic property be in the works?

Have you played Draw Something? This addictive adaptation of Pictionary looks and feels like a Zynga game--especially when the game's microtransactions start appearing. (You can buy additional plays and additional colors, for example.)

But it isn't a Zynga game. Or, should we say, it wasn't a Zynga game. The social gaming giant just announced that it has acquired OMGPOP, developers of the app sensation.

Tiny Tower dev 'thanks' Zynga for making clone

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. No wonder NimbleBit, developers of the "iPhone Game of the Year" Tiny Tower, is so flattered by Zynga's latest release.

In a passive-aggressive open letter to Zynga, NimbleBit congratulates the social games behemoth on their newest release, Dream Heights. With a similar premise and gameplay mechanic, the letter calls Zynga "big fans" of Tiny Tower. The letter ends: "we are looking forward to inspiring you with our future games!"
