So what if you're not willing to shell out $60 a year for Gold services? Microsoft is hoping to change your mind with its new "Entertainment Unlocked" promotion.

Two more entertainment apps are available to download off Xbox Live today: the Crackle app from Sony Pictures and CinemaNow from Best Buy.

CinemaNow allows Xbox Live Gold members to buy and rent movies and TV shows. (Why anyone would do this instead of using the Zune Marketplace, we're not entirely sure.) Crackle offers "thousands of full-length movies and TV shows" for free.

UFC on Xbox Live begins PPV service with UFC 143, free UFC RIO offered as apology

Microsoft embarrassed itself when it told UFC fans to "seek alternate means" of watching UFC 141. Technical issues plagued the live streaming event, preventing eager fans from watching the game, which would normally cost $45. Microsoft has since apologized for the outage, and is currently distributing apology emails.

"We are offering UFC RIO on Xbox LIVE for free and a month of Xbox LIVE Gold membership to all who were affected by the outage," a Microsoft representative told us. "Our hope is that this gesture conveys our sincere apologies, and helps restore confidence in our customers and fans."

Fox News and Wall Street Journal coming to Xbox 360

Xbox Live has acquired yet another entertainment partner. News Corporation will be bringing a variety of TV, news, and video apps to the Xbox 360 later this year from their most popular brands: FOX, Fox News Channel, IGN Entertainment, and The Wall Street Journal.

As with HBO Go, video content from the Fox News Channel and FOX apps will require an "authenticated" subscription from "participating" cable and satellite TV distributors. And, as with all TV apps on Xbox 360, a Live Gold membership is required.

UFC on Xbox Live suffers technical issues, Microsoft reissuing free vouchers

If you were fast/lucky enough, you were one of the 30,000 people that were granted a free view on the new UFC app on Xbox Live. UFC 141 was going to be the public debut of Microsoft's foray into the world of live beatdowns.

Unfortunately, it didn't work too well. A string of technical issues plagued the event, and Microsoft even sent an e-mail "encouraging consumers to seek alternate means for viewing UFC 141." Microsoft was essentially telling UFC fans to, essentially, run to the nearest bar or just do what they'd normally do: use cable.
