Halo Waypoint app on Windows Phone, iOS, Android this week, offers real-time tracking

Microsoft's Halo Waypoint app launches on December 10 for Windows Phone 7, iOS, and Android devices. It also offers an optional feature dubbed 'ATLAS.' The premium add-on will tap directly into a user's Halo: Reach or Halo Anniversary matches to provide real-time data during ongoing games.

[UPDATE: We've since received clarification from Microsoft that Kinectimals for Windows Phone will, in fact, support some camera integration. Players will be able to place their pet on the background of their choice by selecting an image from their phone's photo library. -Ed]

One of the cuddlier announcements to come out of Gamescom 2011 today was that the Kinectimals series will be coming to Windows Phone. Like the Kinect original, the game will allow players to virtually interact with cuddly cats... and bears!

iOS gamers play twice as much as any other mobile platform

It's no surprise that iOS device owners play more games than owners of other mobile devices. The library is unquestionably more extensive on the App Store, and while platforms like Android and Windows Phone 7 are catching up, the leader is clear. Market research company Nielsen discovered exactly how much of a lead iOS has over the platforms: it's almost twice as much. iOS gamers spend an average of 14.7 hours gaming in a month, versus 9.3 hours for Android. That's a lot of bathroom breaks!

Microsoft's fledgling Windows Phone 7 platform performed surprisingly poorly, with only 4.7 hours of gaming per month. Given the platform's integration with Xbox Live and achievements, this figure seems surprisingly low. Read more »

Electronic Arts Bringing Tetris, Monopoly, Sims, and NFS for Windows Phone 7 Launch

Electronic Arts has announced its launch line-up for the Windows Phone 7 platform, which will initially include four games and support for Xbox Live. That includes achievements, i.e. the real reason to play games on Windows Phone 7. WP7 devices will be available on November 8 in the US (October 21 in Europe and Asia).

A large list of launch games was also released by Microsoft at Gamescom 2010. EA's four titles are Need for Speed Undercover, Tetris, The Sims 3, and Monopoly. More details about all four titles can be found below from Microsoft's press release. Read more »

At GamesCom 2010, Microsoft revealed its plans for its newest "major gaming platform." With details of Windows Phone 7 rather scarce since it was first revealed in February, Microsoft uncovered its strategy -- including Xbox Live functionality and launch software.

Its mobile OS, which will launch "this holiday season," appears to feature most functions promised during the platform's original announcement. Users will have access to familiar Xbox Live features, such as Gamerscore and Achievements, Avatars, messaging, friends list and turn-based multiplayer. Read more »

Years after unveiling a "Live Anywhere" initiative to bring the online gaming service to mobile phones, Microsoft today unveiled that the platform will be part of the new "Windows Phone 7 Series" due to hit retailers "by holiday 2010."
